This past weekend I had the privilege of traveling to Ottawa, ON to represent Sonicbids at COCA’s annual national conference. This was my second consecutive visit to the COCA convention, and it’s one of the nicest groups of people I’ve ever encountered.

COCA is where all of the Canadian college programmers gather to see talent and learn about running an organization. In addition to showcases, there are educational sessions where students and professional bounce ideas off of one another. You can check more out here.

The Chair for this year’s National Convention was Christina Burns from McMaster University, and she and her staff did an exceptional job organizing the conference. It was truly one of the best events I’ve been to this year (and I’ve been to more than a few).

I saw so much outstanding entertainment in my two days at the event. The highlights for me: The New Cities (see http://sonicbids.com/thenewcities) from Montreal, they filled the dance floor, and nearly blew the roof off of Maverick’s, even from all the way down on the basement stage.

I also loved Saturday’s music showcase, featuring folk rockers Jon and Roy. They made the trip all the way from Vancouver, BC. After some rough technical difficulties, they rebounded and set the raucous COCA crowd on fire.

I also have to give some props to Dana Alexander and Ted Morris. They’re both comedians from Toronto who really connected with the COCA crowd at the matinee comedy showcase on Saturday.

Sunday morning I participated in COCA’s roundtable session. Programmers rotate to a new table every 10 minutes. My table’s discussion focused on solutions for finding the right artist for an event. It was great to finally put faces to so many people I’d only had phone conversations with.

The highlight of Sunday evenings (besides the Celtics dominating the Lakers) was Newfoundland’s Hey Rosetta! They recently released an album called “Into your Lungs.” They make beautiful orchestral indie rock, and were my personal highlight (again, besides the Celtics) of Sunday night.

Thank you to everyone at COCA for making this event happen. This makes me two-for-two in COCA conferences, so you can bet I’ll be back next year.
