It’s my favorite time of the year – not only is it seasonably appropriate to force plush reindeer antlers on my beloved dog, Sawyer (pictured at right), but it’s also a time to look back on the albums and artists that pushed the musical needle forward in the year that was.

So with that in mind, I thought this the right avenue to get some good old fashioned top 5 banter going between our staff and our community.  Here are my (and Sawyer’s) 5 favorites.

5. Fleet Foxes: Fleet Foxes

Have you ever thought you were cool and liked something super obscure, only to find it for sale on the counter for Starbucks on your way to work?  Yea. It happened to me with these guys.  That said, I can see why it did.  This record is a sweet, sweet combination of accessible and different, and though a certain alternative radio programmer I spoke with this year called them ‘the least edgy band he’d heard in decades,’ that’s all well and good.  Maybe the truth is, I’m not so edgy myself.  I’m wearing boat shoes and a collared shirt, I dig this record, and I’m not afraid to say so.

4.  Darker My Love: 2

This record rules.  It’s versatile. It’s coherent.  It rocks really hard.  I like it more with every listen. The first track makes me feel like I’m actually edgy despite the boat shoes and collared shirt mentioned in the last paragraph.

3.  Spiritualized: Songs in A&E

I would have put this at number two, but I’m kind of ticked off that track 5, Soul on Fire, has been stuck in my head since May.  I secretly liked this record better than the band’s critically acclaimed ‘Ladies and Gentlemen…’ until yesterday when I listened to ‘Ladies and Gentlemen’ for the first time in a while and decided I was a moron for thinking anything could ever be better than that.  I stand corrected, but ‘Songs in A&E’ is near perfect in and of itself.

2.  Bon Iver:  For Emma , Forever Ago

I don’t want to talk about this one.  It’s too pretty and I might weep gently if I try to describe it in too much detail.  People in the office would judge me.

1. TV on the Radio: Dear Science

If you don’t own this record, go buy it now.  It’s great front to back, and still innovative while being by far their most accessible.  I saw them live at the Wilbur in Boston this fall and it was my favorite show of the year.  My number 1 by a long ways, and I listen to it at least once a week.

So, all in all a great year for great bands. I hope you’ll reply back with your own so I can poach your musical taste to selfishly expand my own horizons…

Hey Folks! Here are mine!

* Coldplay – Viva la Vida
— Yes, I will be like every one else on the Planet and list this album. It’s great, and I can’t deny it just because Coldplay is hugely popular.

* Bon Iver – For Emma Forever Ago
— Again, this was another acclaimed album by many. But, I can’t deny the album is beautiful and I have special pride Bon Iver is from my home state of WI!

* Erykah Badu – New Amerykah, Pt. 1: 4th World War
— This album is interesting and has a great vibe. Erykah Badu is a true musical pioneer in my mind.

* Camille – Le fil (The Thread)
— This record had a really interesting concept, where there is a low-level tone that is in the background of every song, which unites the entire album. Besides, I have a soft spot for French.

* Wild Beasts – Limbo Panto
— This band has really interesting, classical-style vocals, but compose their songs to more rock and alternative sounds. The blend of styles and genres creates a totally unique album.

Sonicbids Artists I discovered in 2008:

* The Low Anthem: http://www.sonicbids.com/LowAnthem
— Low Anthem is a solid folk and bluegrass album. I saw these guys live and they put on a stellar and interesting show.

* Depotax: http://www.sonicbids.com/Depotax
— Probably the craziest artist I’ve seen on Sonicbids. He’s from Belguim and looks downright scary! But the music is out there and again, I love hearing something different.)

* D. Scott & The Family: http://www.sonicbids.com/DScottAndTheFamily
— Solid Soul and R&B. I love hearing a powerful woman’s voice on a soulful record. Few things are better.)

* Here Come The Mummies: http://www.sonicbids.com/hctm
— Funky AND one of craziest concepts for a band. Can’t argue with that.

* Lindsay Kupser: http://www.sonicbids.com/LindsayKupser
— I just love how pure and clean Lindsay’s voice is. Her songs are simple and honest and there’s something really refreshing about her to me.

Happy New Year All!

Stephen,
Being a part of the sonicbids staff, I thought you would be picking your top 5 from the pool of sonic bids artists…not label bands.

Joe Ryan wrote on January 7th, 2009 at 9:52 am

Joe, great point. I wanted to throw in some really great Sonicbids bands I found out about this past year:

Joel Plaskett Emergency: http://www.sonicbids.com/joelplaskettemergency
Black Swan Green – http://www.sonicbids.com/blackswangreen
Lucinda Black Bear – http://www.sonicbids.com/lucindablackbear

Good call, Joe. Every person on earth should own all 5 of the following.

5. The Telepathic Butterflies – Breakfast in Suburbia
Automatic inclusion for naming their band after something from Kurt Vonnegut. Oh yea, they sound awesome too.
http://www.sonicbids.com/thetelepathicbutterflies

4. The Low Anthem – Oh My God, Charlie Darwin
I was going to write something clever but got distracted by how good ‘To Ohio’ is.
http://www.sonicbids.com/lowanthem

3. Black Swan Green – The Ruin Gaze
Get pumped; Shoegaze is coming back with authority.
http://www.sonicbids.com/blackswangreen

2. Music for Headphones – Preface/Alternate
I do in fact, only listen to these guys through headphones. ‘Doctor’(off their last record) reminds me of a cross between Sonic Youth, The Talking Heads, and the Beta Band – which by definition makes it my favorite song of all time.

1. Brighton, MA – Amateur Lovers
Ironically, I live in Brighton, MA. This band is actually from Illinois, sadly, but they’re one of my favorite bands right now. Sunblinded is a killer track and much the chagrin of my friends, I sing it aloud whenever I forget my sunglasses.

Good point, Joe Ryan. It’s almost harder to pick a top 5 Sonicbids members because there are over 160,000 of them, and within that number tons of great talent. You can’t say the same about label releases since there are only so many left after some would describe as a lowest-common-denominator filtering system. But here are a few from this year that I think are among the exceptional:
1) Built By Snow (kick-a*s rock from Pflugerville, Texas – or Austin, really): http://www.sonicbids.com/BuiltBySnow
2) R.E.U.B. (hip hop from VA, I discovered him through one of our internet radio partners – check out the “dancin’ machine” track): http://www.sonicbids.com/reubmuzik1
3) Melissa Lusk (pop from MA, but I met her working in NYC): http://www.sonicbids.com/MelissaLusk
4) D. Scott & The Family (I agree with Tess above – these guys are soul! Saw ‘em first 2 years ago, and they were great): http://www.sonicbids.com/DScottAndTheFamily
5) Adam Klein (Athens, GA-based singer/songwriter, look for him in late 2009-to-2010 after he returns from living a year in the continent of Africa): http://www.sonicbids.com/AdamKlein2

check ‘em out, happy 2009!
